Contemporary art reflects Italy's rich history and culture. Italy has an impressive number of talented sculptors creating innovative and thought-provoking work.
Our ranking of the five best contemporary Italian sculptors is as follows:
Lucio Oliveri was born on 16 October 1934 in Milan and is a contemporary Italian sculptor who lives and works in his native city. His works stand out for their masterful use of bronze and their attention to detail. Oliveri was a master at depicting the human figure, and his statues are often marked by unrivalled elegance and refinement.
Aron Demetz was born on 29 September 1972 and is based in Selva di Val Gardena, Bolzano, where he lives and works. His choice of ever-new materials highlights the artist's thematic and narrative imagination; he has a predilection for wood, including charred wood, and for metals such as bronze, but he also works with clay, resin, glass and other materials.
Fabio Viale, an illusionist of matter, is able to "transform" marble into polystyrene, paper and popcorn. On several occasions he has staged events that fooled the press and created installations depicting events that never took place.
Mimmo Paladino Domenico Paladino was born on 18 December 1948 in Paduli, in the province of Benevento.
An eclectic artist, Mimmo Paladino has worked both with the small format of the canvas and with large-scale installations, developing a language that fuses elements from different times and places, from Egyptian, Etruscan and Early Christian art, while experimenting with a wide variety of materials and techniques.
Andrea Roggi was born in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany, on 2 July 1962. From adolescence the artist cultivated several of his many interests, such as painting and poetry, before gradually turning to sculpture. For a short time he studied sculptural technique with the artist Enzo Scatragli, also a native of Castiglion Fiorentino.
